Serena Lafond

Hello, my name is Serena Lafond. I am an oil painter and I live in Marysville, California. I specialize in portraits.

In my work, I aim to explore the human condition through the exchange of methods and materials. Through the reconciling of micro-expressions and materiality of paint, I look to deconstruct and reconstruct the figure. My process grows out of observations and conversations with the people around me. The discussions are rooted in the idiosyncrasies of what makes someone human. With my camera continuously firing, the photographs become the springboard of my drawings and paintings.

About my traffic utility box design:

“People of Sacramento”

Original Medium: Acrylic and oil paint on canvas

As someone who is not originally from California, I have found Sacramento to be a diverse, hardworking, and creative community made up of people who thrive as themselves. My goal was to represent the individuals who make up the community. The portraits are of an Amazon employee, a student, a construction worker, and a patron of a local bar.

Red and orange embody Sacramento. The red within the state’s flag and the golden hue of the tower bridge, inspired the background colors. The orange “S" shape passing through all four images mimics the city’s Flag; symbolizing that the city connects and lives through all of us.

By overlapping people, I wanted to demonstrate the multifaceted and everchanging elements of human nature. The people painted in these portraits are continually evolving and moving, however, the one constant being they are part of Sacramento and Sacramento is a part of them.
