Jaya King
Hello, my name is Jaya King, and I am an interdisciplinary painter based in Sacramento, California. I specialize in acrylic, encaustic, and mixed-media painting.
Nature and the unique people around me inspire my semi-abstract acrylic, mixed media, and encaustic artwork...bringing my mood into the painting process. When I paint a skyscape, I am not setting out to paint “clouds”, but rather an impression of color, movement, and negative space. When I paint “clouds” I am painting how I am feeling at that moment.
My mixed media portraits are painted through a similar, distorted lens – balancing intense expression with a semi-abstract looseness. My portraits are classically drawn using graphite and charcoal, and then abstracted using black encaustic gesso as stain. Similar to my skyscapes, I find with my portraiture I am subliminally painting some part of myself. Or rather, connecting with something I see in me or I wish I had. Those are the attributes that make the portrait powerful and in that sense each portrait I paint is a mirror to myself.
My process is the connecting thread...whether it is in my landscapes or figures. The semi-abstract nature of my work allows the viewer’s mind to fill in the blanks, ultimately creating a personal connection with the painting. To me, that connection is the most important facet to my artwork.

About my traffic utility box design:
“SuperStarr”
When I learned my box would be in front of the state capitol I knew I wanted to insert some strong California-Girl-Power into the district. The image of my childhood best friend, Starr, would add the perfect energy. The original painting of Starr is mixed media on a four-foot by six-foot wood panel. She is initially drawn with graphite and charcoal, and then intensified with black encaustic gesso and black acrylic paint. I superimposed California poppies around the box as a nod to the state capitol. I painted about 100 India ink poppies on oversized drawing paper in order to create just the right shapes.
To me, having a powerful young, female presence in front of the capitol brings fresh energy to the political landscape.
