Davy Fiveash
Originally from the deep south, folk art, craft and narrative originated and continue to influence my work. I currently live and work in Sacramento, CA
My work addresses our need to find a place that we can call home. It is a call for consolation and community. Using symbolic subject matter derived from the natural world, along with patterns, textures and mood, I create a generous image, and invite the viewer into a very intimate space. These settings are juxtaposed with questions about identity, community and belonging.

About my traffic utility box design:
“Squirrels in Natures Boudoir"
Original Medium: Fabric collage
Upon inspection of the location of my box, I looked around at the specific environment of that corner of Cesar Chavez Square. There are large blooming magnolia trees that canopy the corner with squirrels playing. This reminded me of my home in Georgia (as much of Sacramento does) and I combined that with some Blanche Devereaux pattern that I had been saving for a special occasion. Everything came together and resulted in a fun, colorful, feisty mood that was as much fun to create as it will be to viewers on the street. This project opened up my studio practice to new directions and I am very happy I participated.
