D’Arcy Dent

Hello, my name is D’Arcy Dent, and I am a painter based in Sacramento, California. Lately, I find myself in the colorful world of whimsical acrylic paintings.

I began painting with acrylics when I was in my early twenties, then stopped until my early fifties. As a self-taught painter, it took some time to begin to find my way back to producing something I attached value to. Acrylics have proven to be a flexible and forgiving medium that allows me to create everything from washes to deep, vibrant textures. I continue to be drawn to every corner of the possible world a canvas can offer. Whether it’s a detail in an eye or the pleasing combination of colors from an accidental brushstroke, the results are often a surprise to me, and that’s the way I like it

About my traffic utility box design:

“Watching Fox,” “Happy to See You Fox,” “Fox Pup,” “Smirky Fox,” “‘Hi There’ Fox”

Original Medium: A series of five acrylic paintings on canvases

The Fox Box The placement of The Fox Box on 5thand J street meant it was right in front of the hospital, faced on-coming traffic and people walking across the street in the crosswalk. Foxes have a lively color palette, so many different expressions and a great energy to bring to city streets. I decided to take a few different expressions to address the specific onlookers, While bringing some bright color and happiness to the front of the hospital.

Watching Fox is looking at oncoming traffic. This guy is sort of a “traffic cop” making sure everyone is following the rules.

Happy to See You Fox will be visible to people coming out of the hospital doors. I thought it would be nice to see a happy face when leaving the hospital. It’s also visible from the street as one is driving away, giving the impression of the fox chasing the cars.

Fox pup is also visible from the front of the hospital and offers a gentler, softer face for those who are in the hospital looking out or coming out the doors and walking to the corner.

Smirky Fox is visible to those who are crossing the street to come toward the hospital. He’s just a bit of sass helping us take things a little less serious in this serious time.

“Hi There” Fox is a happy face looking up from the top of the box to those looking out of the hospital windows-a smiling face that is happy to see someone looking back.I hope the fox box will bring lots of smiles and conversation. I hope it will bring comfort and laughter. I hope everyone will have at least one fox to identify with, even if it’s just for the day.
