Brooke Correa, nee Mathews

My name is Brooke Correa and I am a wildlife artist and activist, specializing in drawn animal portraits of mixed media.

I am particularly inspired by animals that face adversities and/or a negative stigma. I work to bring meaning and emotion to animals across the spectrum of species, with a goal of creating a mode of connection between the viewer and the subject. I mainly work with drawing materials and am well versed in the likes of oil pastel, ink pen, colored pencil, and graphite.

About my traffic utility box design:

“Night Life”

Medium: Mixed Media, Oil Pastel and Ink Pen

Located in the heart of the downtown night life scene, I wanted to create a design that represented another kind of night life: local nocturnal animals that roam the darkened streets and skies of Sacramento. The coyote, oppossum, bat, and owl have become an increasingly present, if not elusively so, part of the city and often get a bad rap for their presence on the streets. In reality, these night critters are a key part to our local ecosystem and help in maintaining species diversity and a healthy environment for all.

These works were created with oil pastels and ink pen and use the juxtaposition of elements such as color and texture to represent local flora and fauna wildlife.
